The Allen Institute for AI has launched Satlas, a new tool that maps renewable energy projects and tree coverage around the world, reports Justine Calma.
Satlas uses satellite imagery from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellites but offers a “Super-Resolution” feature to enhance the images. “Basically, it uses deep learning models to fill in details, like what buildings might look like, to generate high-resolution images,” Calma says. The Satlas map currently offers global views of:
- Marine Infrastructure
- Renewable Energy
- Tree Cover
The AI-generated geospatial datasets are freely and publicly available and can be downloaded for offline analysis, according to the Satlas website.
