As previously mentioned, Hacktoberfest 2021 is going on right now, with the aim of encouraging increased participation in the open source community.
But, Hacktoberfest is not the only game in town; many other hackathons provide learning opportunities, coding challenges, and prizes for coders of all skill levels. For example, the PyTorch Annual Hackathon, featuring $39,000 in prizes, runs until November 3rd, and Chef’s Automate for Good hackathon, offering more than $60,000 in prizes, runs until October 25th.
Upcoming Hackathons
Hackathons have traditionally been hosted in conjunction with technical conferences or on school campuses, but many are now going virtual or offering a virtual option to encourage global participation.

Hack This Fall 2.0

Hack This Fall 2.0 is a 48-hour virtual hackathon with ₹359,000 total in prizes that aims to promote hackers and help them nurture their new ideas and prototypes. Challenge categories include climate change and environment, blockchain and crypto, and diversity and inclusion. Check out the complete rules for more information.
Hack or Treat?

The Hack or Treat? event, hosted by Major League Hacking (MLH), features 48 hours of workshops, hacking, and Halloween fun. The schedule includes an Intro to Blockchain workshop, App Deployment and Security with DigitalOcean, and MS Paint Bob Ross: Spooky Edition. Note that all participants must abide by the MLH Code of Conduct; more details are on the website.
Girls Hoo Hack

Girls Hoo Hack is a virtual 48-hour hackathon for coders of all levels of experience hosted by Girls Who Code at the University of Virginia. The event aims to foster a diverse community and offers a beginner’s guide to hackathons with workshops from October 12–16. You can find more information on the website.
DeveloperWeek Austin 2021 Hackathon

This virtual hackathon is part of DeveloperWeek Austin Conference and Expo. It features a full day of workshops and includes $12,500 total in prizes. Note that all hackathon attendees must be preregistered on Eventbrite and Devpost. Check out the full rules on the website.
Technica
Nov 13–Nov 14, 2021
Technica is the world’s largest hackathon for underrepresented genders, hosted annually by students at the University of Maryland. It offers four different tracks to accommodate various interests and skill levels with track-specific mentors. This 24-hour MLH event will be hosted in a hybrid format, so you can hack virtually or in person. See details on the website.
