Scuderia Ferrari has announced a new open source ventilator, called FI5, as part of its countermeasures against COVID-19. For this initiative, Ferrari joined forces with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) to design a reliable, easy-to-operate pulmonary ventilator that can help optimize oxygen consumption and treat patients suffering from the COVID-19 virus during this global emergency.
Additionally, to facilitate production and adoption of the device, the technical specifications of FI5 – including the design, firmware, and software – are being made available as an open source project, so anyone can produce or modify it as needed. According to Professor Giorgio Metta, Scientific Director of the Italian Institute of Technology, this open approach was a fundamental part of the initiative. “The technological transfer of research is one of the central elements of our strategy,” he said.
Also according to the announcement, companies from Italy, Mexico, and the United States have already contacted Ferrari and IIT about certifying and distributing the product
