Google’s recent ”Open source by the numbers” report details the company’s increased engagement in open source development from 2015 to 2019.
Most of Google’s open source work is done within two hosting platforms: GitHub and Google’s own Git service, git-on-borg, which hosts Android and Chromium. According to the report, Google hosts over 8,000 public repositories on GitHub and more than 1,000 public repositories on git-on-borg. Additionally:
- In 2019, more than 9% of Alphabet’s full-time employees actively contributed to public repositories on git-on-borg and GitHub.
- Over the last five years, Google has doubled the number of public repos, growing by approximately 25% per year.
- In 2019, Googlers created over 570,000 issues, opened over 150,000 pull requests, and created more than 36,000 push events on GitHub.
The report also notes Google’s support of security projects, such as OSS-Fuzz; community programs, such as Google Summer of Code; and investment in open source research.
