General Motors (GM) has announced that it is joining the Eclipse Foundation and contributing the open source, shared “uProtocol,” which is intended “to speed the development of software-defined vehicles,” reports Andrew Hawkins.
GM’s main related effort is Ultifi, a Linux-based software platform that “can power everything from weather apps to potentially controversial features like the use of in-car cameras for facial recognition.”
“The move comes as the auto industry scrambles to hire more software developers and programmers to help produce cars that are essentially computers on wheels,” Hawkins says. “The recent Silicon Valley layoffs have afforded those companies even more of an opportunity to build up their ranks of coders and tech-savvy workers.”
