Open source contributions are necessary to recruit developer talent, said Beth Pariseau in a recent TechTarget article. The ability to contribute to open source projects is seen as essential for experienced developers and has additionally spurred the development of enterprise open source programs.
The article also quoted Richard Fontana, senior commercial counsel at IBM Red Hat, who said, "There's a generation of software engineers now, working in all sorts of companies, for whom open source is just the most natural way to think about how to do software development."
Additionally, a July 2018 research study cited by the article “suggests that open source contributions ultimately have a significant positive impact on the business, and that impact is increased by the size and significance of those contributions.”
