Meta has released a commercial version of Llama 2, its open source AI large language model (LLM), reports Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols.
Llama 2 is available free of charge for research and commercial use, and “Meta is including model weights and starting code for the pre-trained model and conversational fine-tuned versions,” says Vaughan-Nichols. Llama 2 is available in the Azure AI model catalog, as well as through Amazon Web Services, Hugging Face, and other providers.
Whether Llama 2 is truly open source remains an issue for debate. “While Meta says the right things, the Llama 2 Community License Agreement has not been approved by the gold standard group of open-source licensing, the Open Source Initiative (OSI),” Vaughan-Nichols notes.
