GitHub’s AI-assisted coding tool, Copilot, is now available via paid subscription for developers and is available for free to students and maintainers of popular open source projects.
Copilot, which is priced at $10 per month or $100 a year for developers, is powered by the OpenAI Codex language model, which has been trained on "billions of lines of publicly available source code and natural language, including code in public repositories on GitHub.”
The tool works as an editor extension that suggests code in real time. “When you type code or comments, GitHub Copilot suggests the next line of code,” but it can also suggest “complete methods, boilerplate code, whole unit tests, and even complex algorithms,” the announcement says.
