Site reliability engineering (SRE) is first and foremost “about innovation, education, and enablement,” says the 2022 State of SRE Report. Although the practice continues to evolve, the SRE role is generally focused on greater alignment between development teams in order to automate processes and enable organizations to meet security, quality, and performance goals.
According to the 2022 report, the strategic importance of SRE is better understood now as compared with three years ago, but challenges remain, with only 20 percent of respondents claiming to have a mature practice.
Although SRE is central to driving faster digital transformation, most organizations “remain relatively immature in their adoption of SRE practices,” says Bernd Greifeneder, Founder and CTO at Dynatrace.
How SREs Spend Their Time
According to the report, SREs currently spend their time:
- Reducing mean time to recovery (67%)
- Building and maintaining automation code (60%)
- Ensuring security vulnerabilities are detected and eliminated quickly (58%)
Other findings from the report include:
- 68% of SREs expect their role in security to become more central in the future.
- 71% of organizations are increasing the use of automation across every part of the lifecycle to reduce toil for developers and SREs.
- 85% of SREs want to standardize on the same observability platform from Dev to Ops and security by 2025.
“Reliability, experience, and security have become critical success factors in a world where every second of downtime leads to lost revenue, declining share prices, and lasting reputational damage,” Greifeneder says.
